About CDS

The Communicable Disease Section (CDS) of the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health has the responsibility of monitoring and controlling communicable disease in the County. State law requires medical providers, hospitals, and laboratories to report selected diseases and conditions to the local health department. The local health department is then required to investigate the extent of these illnesses, report to the California Department of Public Health the number of diseases and apply infection control measures. CDS works together with County residents, health care providers, schools, businesses, and other organizations to keep the County healthy and safe from communicable diseases.

CDS performs disease surveillance, implements infection control measures, and provides education designed to reduce or manage the incidence of infectious disease that are consistent with California law. CDS provides a wide range of personalized services including working directly with residents who have communicable disease conditions and referring them to health care providers. CDS also works with schools and health care providers to maximize immunization coverage for all ages.

CDS staff are an excellent resource for information about reportable diseases and conditions, including tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, and vaccine preventable diseases.

CDS works to contain diseases by:
