Medical Therapy Program (MTP) in Schools
TEEN GROUPS
The Teen Group was set up to be a unique therapy setting in which teens or preteens in CCS can get together and discuss important topics and share feelings with each other in a safe environment which they have a common bond. The goal is to ENCOURAGE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER teens with disabilities to promote independent living.
The participants have to be open to the MTU for OT services and have a current evaluation recommending participation in the teen group. Participants need to be able to communicate and have the ability to interact with others. Participants can be Junior High, High School, and early college age. They need to be able to communicate and have the ability to interact with others. In addition, they need to complete an application and sign a commitment form. The schedule topics are on the schedule but may change if the group indicates a desire to gain skills in a particular life skill. During the meeting there is a life skill that is addressed, a discussion time, a craft or baking project, and their OT evaluation goals are reviewed/addressed too.
PARENT GROUPS
Parent Caregiver groups provide space for participants to meet with other families to practice new social skills, explore emotions in an inclusive and welcoming place. Support groups remind parents that they are not alone and there are other parents facing similar challenges.
The purpose of Parent/Caregiver support groups is to ensure that families of children with any kind of disability or special health care need have the knowledge and support to make informed choices that enhance their own physical and mental health wellbeing as well as their children’s development.
