Norovirus

Norovirus also known as “food poisoning” or “stomach flu” is very contagious! You get norovirus from contaminated food or water, by touching contaminated surfaces, or from an already infected individual. This virus can spread very rapidly and can even settle on surfaces. According to the CDC, this virus causes millions of illnesses annually and contributes to thousands of hospitalizations. Norovirus illness can be very serious so make sure you understand some of the basic prevention methods of norovirus to protect you and your family from getting sick.

What are the signs and symptoms of Norovirus?

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea

The most common symptom of Norovirus is vomiting and diarrhea. Most people start to feel better in 3 to 4 days. If you begin to feel the symptoms described above DO NOT prepare food for others until symptoms stop, try to stay home to avoid getting others sick, immediately clean and disinfect. If symptoms worsen please contact your health provider.

How to prevent Norovirus?

You can help prevent the spread of Norovirus by following these simple prevention steps:

  • Wash your hands before handling, serving, and eating food for at least 20 seconds with warm water and soap to help reduce the risk of harmful bacteria.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before cooking or eating them.
  • Cook Seafood thoroughly.
  • Throw out food that might be contaminated.
  • Clean and disinfect kitchen surfaces before and after cooking or preparing food.
