Test Name:Measles PCR
Test Methodology:Detection of viral RNA by reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

Pre-Approval Required:None
Accepted Specimens:Nasopharyngeal swabs (NP), NP aspirate, or throat swab (OP) in liquid viral or universal transport media (VTM or UTM). Urine is also acceptable.
Specimen Stability:For throat swab or NP swab collect within 2 weeks of rash onset.

Unprocessed urine: Collect 10-50 ml from the first part of the urine stream in a sterile container within 2 weeks of rash onset.

Processed urine: Centrifuge urine specimen (50-100 mL) at 2500 x g for 15 minutes at 2-8 ºC.   Resuspend the pellet in 2-3 ml of VTM or UTM.  If processing is not possible, store and ship the sample at 2-8 ºC within 24 hours (or -20 ºC or colder)
Storage/Transport Conditions:Process urine as described above for storage longer than 24 hours. Store all specimens at 4 ºC

Ship refrigerated specimens on cold packs, frozen specimens on dry ice within 24 – 72 hours using appropriate DOT/IATA approved shipping procedures.
Turnaround Time:3 days
Reference Range:Measles virus Not Detected by real-time RT-PCR.
