Healthcare Facilities
CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) strives to improve the health of eligible families and communities especially those at risk of obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and food insecurity. The Department of Public Health Nutrition and Wellness Services (NWS), which is a CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) grantee, is partnering with healthcare facilities to address food security in their patient populations and to assess food waste reduction, recovery, and redistribution efforts to decrease the amount of edible food being sent to landfills.
Nutrition and Wellness Services aims to:
- Assist healthcare facilities in implementing food insecurity screening of patients
- Provide food assistance resources to healthcare facilities to distribute to patients screening positive for food insecurity
- Evaluate usefulness of food assistance resources provided to patients as appropriate
- Partner with healthcare facilities to assess food waste reduction, recovery, and redistribution efforts
- Provide assistance and resources to healthcare facilities to decrease food waste and improve food recovery. Encourage the adoption and implementation of food waste reduction, recovery, and redistribution strategies as appropriate.
- Provide evidence-based nutrition, healthy beverage and/or physical activity education for patients in partnership with healthcare delivery systems (e.g., clinics, health centers, hospitals)
