Schools

CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) strives to improve the health of eligible families and communities, especially those at risk of obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and food insecurity. Partnering to provide nutrition education, policy support and environmental changes to encourage healthy living.

Nutrition and Wellness Services (NWS) works with qualifying preschool site administration, staff, parents and children to increase nutrition education and physical activity opportunities in center-based, home-based or public school settings. The focus is on children under five years of age, recognizing the importance of early childhood as an opportunity to help establish healthy habits and expose children to a variety of healthy foods.

Early Childhood Education (Preschool)

NWS is involved in a range of activities to support healthy habits and prevent obesity among preschoolers:

  • Nutrition, healthy beverage (water promotion) and physical activity education
  • Nutrition, physical activity education and resources for parents/caregivers
  • Playground stencils at sites to increase active play and encourage learning
  • Wellness committees to develop, implement and strengthen healthy site policies including nutrition standards
  • Site garden initiation or revitalization
  • Smarter Mealtimes including food waste reduction
  • Outreach to improve food insecurity
  • Engagement of champions (site staff, parents, community members, teachers, administrators etc.)

  • Smarter Lunchrooms Movement strategies including food waste reduction
  • Outreach and support to improve food insecurity
  • Engagement of champions (school staff, parents, students, community members, teachers, administrators etc.)
